Role: Quantitative Social Scientist

Role Purpose

Verisk Maplecroft’s data-driven solutions offer global scope, granular detail and singular insight into the primary political, human rights, economic and environmental issues impacting organisational resilience, sustainable sourcing and the investment landscape.

The Quantitative Social Scientist sits at the heart of our Analytics function, helping clients and colleagues through the production of data-led insight. The successful candidate can expect to work on:

  • developing our range of predictive models at the intersection of political, economic, human rights and environmental risk
  • answering challenging problems for clients in bespoke engagements – typically combining our proprietary datasets with client inputs - through the smart application of quantitative techniques
  • producing regular thought-leadership/ written analysis that help users to interpret our data and gain insight into how the world around them is developing
  • developing novel datasets working with experts from across our thematic disciplines, software team and the wider family of Verisk companies, with particular emphasis on the development of machine-coded events datasets.

Main Responsibilities

  • Development and application of methodologies for a range of predictive models
  • Administration of the relevant databases to maintain data quality and integrity
  • Management of projects, including the update cycle for the predictive models and client-facing projects
  • Supporting clients in their use of our data through calls and meetings
  • Innovating with colleagues in the Analytics team to develop our analytic offering
  • Marketing the our data offering to target audiences through the production of thought-leadership/ press campaigns/ presentations

Knowledge, skills and experience:

  • Robust quantitative skills. The successful applicant will have a PhD or Masters in a quantitative field, with strong programming skills in a relevant language (Python and R preferred, but proven aptitude is the essential element)
  • Domain knowledge. Candidates should have a background in a field related to political risk/science, economics, human rights or environmental risk
  • Project management. Work is largely project based, and the candidate will have experience of successfully delivering projects.

Role: Senior Sustainability Analyst
Team: Human Rights and Environment
Reports to: Head of Research
Location: London or Bath

Role Purpose

The successful candidate will play a key role conducting research and analysis of sustainability risks within raw material / commodity supply chains. The research outputs and insights from the candidate will be used by the world’s leading companies across retail, food and beverage, ICT and financial sectors to help embed sustainability within their supply chain strategies and operational decision making.

The role will involve close collaboration with our Global Commodities Content Lead, Human Rights, Environment and Analytics research teams plus regular consulting engagements.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Perform regular research of sustainability risks within raw material / commodity supply chains – the research will largely focus on human rights and environmental challenges at the farm / mine level, but will extend through supply chain tiers and thematic risk areas (e.g. political, economic, market risk, etc.)
  • Incorporate qualitative and quantitative research findings into structured analytical products, including proprietary datasets and written content
  • Conduct peer review of research and content prior to publication, including holding responsibility for final approval of some content before it is published for clients
  • Contribute to the company’s social media strategy via the release of content for Twitter, LinkedIn and other media channels
  • Work closely with colleagues to support innovation, including the development and delivery of new datasets, products and services to meet the needs of our clients
  • Delivering subject-specific and theoretical insights to clients via consulting activity
  • Supporting the Sales and Marketing team through client engagements and the development of thought leadership
  • Communicating regularly with clients, sharing our views and engaging in mutually beneficial dialogue, while building external relationships to maintain understanding of client needs and industry developments

Knowledge, skills and experience

Given the unique nature of this role we are open to applications from candidates with a wide range of professional backgrounds and holding various skills. However, key attributes for the successful candidate are likely to include:

  • Subject matter knowledge of raw material / commodity supply chains
  • Technical understanding of sustainability risks inherent to raw material / commodity supply chains, including human rights and environment
  • Communication skills, particularly the ability to create clear and insightful written content
  • Qualitative and quantitative research expertise

A number of desirable knowledge and skill sets include:

  • In-depth knowledge of one or more key sectors, including consumer and retail, food and beverage, financial services and ICT

Technical

We are looking for a software developer to join our dynamic and innovative Technology Team. The role will require you to conceive, design and build new software applications as well as understand and innovate with our existing products. You should be a good communicator and have the ability to work with the team through a variety of technical challenges.

The role offers great variety and you will have the opportunity to be involved with both internal and external clients, building web based interactive tools, maps and data visualizations as well as maintaining and enhancing on our entire content delivery system and corporate website.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Proven experience in being accountable for application development supporting business objectives while demonstrating independence in software development lifecycle phases from concept and design to testing.

Proven experience in the following areas is essential for the role:

  • Extensive use of Python
  • Analyze designs to build component-based applications in a web/internet delivery environment, including introduction of an application layer, modelling techniques (UML), object-oriented design, complex algorithmic coding, and systematic approaches to application integration.
  • Performs hands-on coding and assists in the architecting of web content solutions. Expert understanding of web architecture and application servers.
  • Provides technical guidance to junior programmers and other software engineers.
  • Proficient with enterprise software/hardware solutions and tools.
  • Demonstrated experience with N-tiered applications, multi-tier architecture, and production Internet architectures.
  • Proven ability to create component/subsystem documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce design and technical specifications as needed for technical documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to create enhancements to websites, web applications and infrastructure.
  • Proven experience in software development, maintenance and delivery with application server experience.
  • Effectively translated customer requirements, recommended system solutions, and helped formulate detailed specifications from which programs are written.
