Verisk Maplecroft has an exciting opportunity for a Head of Software Engineering to join a fast paced, dynamic global business to drive change and innovation.

In close collaboration with the CTO and the other members of the leadership team, the successful candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of how we build and deliver a world-class technology platform for the business and our customers.

We are looking for someone who will lead and inspire the team to develop and deliver products that drive the company forward and provide a first class service to clients around the globe.

The principal responsibility of this role is the leadership and development of the Software Engineering team. This encompasses:

  • Providing technical leadership to the engineers, which will require a strong background in Python web development
  • Working in partnership across the Technology department to deliver end to end solutions
  • Ownership of all software design and development standards and practices
  • Developing product technical roadmaps in collaboration with the CTO, key internal stakeholders, and other groups in Technology
  • Line management of all software engineers
  • Team growth and development including establishing individual learning & development programmes
  • Representing Verisk Maplecroft in cross-organisational working groups focussed on development

The Software Engineering team is responsible for all development work at Verisk Maplecroft, covering projects including our client portal, research CMS, and mobile app.

Interested candidates will:

  • Provide thoughtful input to the overall strategy and technology direction for the ongoing enhancement of our existing products and development of new products
  • Direct the development activities of the software development team
  • Support and deliver product roadmaps in collaboration with key business stakeholders and the wider technology function
  • Take ownership of all software engineering standards, delivery and quality
  • Engender a positive culture of productivity, predictability, and quality across the development team aimed at delivering best-in-class products and services
  • Strategically manage and motivate resources to ensure the team is able to meet projected demand
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders including the CTO and other divisional teams within the business to communicate and promote the technology vision and solutions
  • Work collaboratively with the Technology divisions at our Parent company, Verisk and other Verisk companies to leverage maximum benefit for all
  • Provide clear direction, support and focus to the team, ensuring a commitment to recognise and develop talented individuals

Responsibilities

Team Leadership

  • Engender a positive culture of productivity, predictability and quality across the engineering team aimed at delivering best-in-class products and services
  • Leadership, development and delivery of the team strategy, working practices and processes
  • Strategic resource management to ensure the team is developed in-line with projected demand and operating model
  • Skills and career development within the team keeping technical skills current
  • Recruitment, objective setting, assessment, coaching and mentoring of team members
  • Implementation of Agile and DevOps practices Software Engineering
  • Work with the CTO and other senior technologists to ensure that processes are harmonised, and adhered to
  • Ensure an appropriate set of development, coding and documentation standards are in place without limiting flexibility and ownership
  • Mature and standardise the existing automation of development and release cycles
  • Ensure live service management, product enhancements and innovation work is planned and prioritised alongside product and project delivery
  • Implementation of an agile process and maintaining agility and flexibility in the team are fundamental
  • Working with complex data sets and development of databases and data management systems

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • The successful candidate will have a strong software engineering background and proven track record of delivering a wide and varied portfolio of products
  • Experience of strategic development of a software development function including implementation of Agile and DevOps
  • Experience of defining software development standards and methods and ensuring adherence
  • Ability to work in an open and trusting way to ensure team spirit is maintained and to be part of a virtual team involving multiple locations and time zones
  • Understanding of SCRUM/Agile Project Management
  • Commercially focused
  • Liaison with business leads to support development of the overall product roadmaps
  • Work closely with the CTO to ensure the pipeline of work is properly planned, managed, supported and reported

Role: Specialist - Python Developer
Reports to: Head of Client Solutions

Description

Proven experience in being accountable for application development supporting business objectives while demonstrating independence in software development lifecycle phases from concept and design to testing.

Proven experience in the following areas is essential for the role:

  • Extensive use of Python
  • Analyze designs to build component-based applications in a web/internet delivery environment,including introduction of an application layer, modelling techniques (UML), object-oriented design, complex algorithmic coding, and systematic approaches to application integration.
  • Performs hands-on coding and assists in the architecting of web content solutions. Expert understanding of web architecture and application servers.
  • Provides technical guidance to junior programmers and other software engineers.
  • Proficient with enterprise software/hardware solutions and tools.
  • Demonstrated experience with N-tiered applications, multi-tier architecture, and production Internet architectures.
  • Proven ability to create component/subsystem documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce design and technical specifications as needed for technical documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to create enhancements to websites, web applications and infrastructure.
  • Proven experience in software development, maintenance and delivery with application server experience.
  • Effectively translated customer requirements, recommended system solutions, and helped formulate detailed specifications from which programs are written.
  • Detailed technical understanding of data and technical database design.
  • Demonstrated ability to document development including database design, application design and ongoing documentation of changes and modifications for mid-level to complex applications.
  • Solid understanding of object-oriented design concepts and software development processes and methods.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and maintain mid-level to complex applications.
  • Ability to write effective test scripts.
