Ethical supply chain management
Maplecroft has a long history of working on ethical supply chain and ethical value chain management. This includes in the development of human rights, child labour and other policies, supplier assessment questionnaires, country risk intelligence and reports, as well as monitoring programmes and compliance systems.
Our approach to ethical supply chain management is to determine and map the intrinsic risk exposure of each supplier i.e. relating to sector, product type, geography etc. This is later aligned with specific information on risk management proficiency i.e. how well these risks are managed by suppliers. The latter is determined through either a questionnaire or audit approach, both of which build on relevant ethical supply chain initiatives e.g. Sedex (the Supplier Ethical Data Exchange), Ethical Trade Initiative, Forest Stewardship Council (FCS) etc.
Maplecroft's mapping and risk calculator expertise enables the effective visualisation of supplier risk for different geographies, different supply chain levels (e.g. tier 1) as well as for different sectors and issues e.g. human rights, labour standards etc.
Featured case study
Sedex
Our work with Sedex includes the amendment of its existing Sedex Supplier Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ), the development of a supply chain risk calculator and the bespoke provision of our Global Risks Portfolio for Sedex members.
All three products were developed in close collaboration with both Sedex and its members, including member workshops, telecons and Webex's to ensure content was relevant to different user groups. Both the SAQ and risk calculator are benchmarked against best practice standards including SA 8000, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 as well as the Ethical Trading Initiative and others relevant to the retail, food and garment sectors.
The SAQ and risk calculator provide insight into the risks associated with individual suppliers and supply chains. Our bespoke Global Risks Portfolio provides insight into the operating environment, including more than 110 risk indices and 520 indicators (e.g. status with respect to ILO Conventions, national law, minimum wage etc.) as well as detailed country risk reports.
Sedex is a not for profit membership organisation for businesses committed to continuous improvement of the ethical and responsible practices in their supply chains.
